Hello all

I tend to have a bit of an experimental mind and I'm always thinking of what engines would be great in X car so I put it to you, do you have any of those fantasy builds which are plausible with more money and would seem like a good idea.

Some of the ones I've had ideas of are:
Sierra XR4X4i engine and gearbox into a Triumph Dolomite (3.0 V6 w/ 200bhp in a 4wd 1t car)
Jaguar X type engine and drivetrain into a modern mini (3.0 V6 w/ 230bhp in a 4wd 700kg car)
Ford 302 w/ CNC heads in a mx5 (302 V8 w/ 350bhp in a RWD 1t car)
Porsche flat 6 in a mini Marcos (3.2 f6 w/ 300+ bhp in a RWD 600kg car)

All of these would be mental just to think of, is there any you've thought "when I win the lottery, I'm doing that"?

I had this, quite common one. 2.8 Vr6 into VW Caddy Van.

Black VR6 leather interior, polo dash and door cards, polo carpet, coilovers, induction kit, flipped rear axle, custom exhaust, G60 wheels, passat centre caps.

180BHP ish, up from the standard engine of about 60BHP at the time.

I always wanted to fit a Triumph Herald engine into a Reliant Robin. Apparently a relatively easy swap, and a power jump from 39 to 59bhp, giving about 120bhp/tonne.

I reacon if you lowered a robin, it would be relitivly stable and be a good car to drive

I had one as my first car - only had a motorbike licence at the time. Great fun in the corners as long as I kept my foot in and the rear close to the the point of sliding.

Some folk I knew had Rover 3.5 V8 and Fiat 2.0 Super Mirafiori lumps in Robins, another had a Bond Bug with a full race Sunbeam Stiletto motor in the back...

Always wanted to put a nice ally V8 in my 924, would have made a lovely commuter.
I really quite fancied an Impreza set up in the Subaru pick up that I sold recently (I knew someone who had a 330 bhp BRAT), trouble is I now fancy an Evo' drive train in the Jumbuck, and a Harley engine in a JZR... not enough time tho', just have to settle for the Jag' straight six in the '36 Austin.

When I was contemplating engine swapping my dolomite, I considered a jag straight 6, was out of when I found out size and weight of it, would have ruined the handling and been too big to fit, would have been worth it for the noise tho, nothing beats an old carbed 6, apart from a mechanically injected 6

F4rt from the megane into a mk1 mx5 would work for me. Plumbing might be an issue though.

I suspect you could get a scooby lump in there for less work

The LS3 is a tried and tested swap for the MX5

It is tried and tested, although I had thought a scooby lump with 4wd would make an interesting build, would maybe be nose heavy. Would have to be a north-south arrangement as the engine would sit far back in the bay to make up for it. In fact, using a Subaru engine would work as its short enough to mounted far back so a diff can be mounted in front of the engine to power the front wheels. Would maybe use a centre diff or something to reduce weight

The site called British V8 might also be of interest.

Check out the photo gallery. Some lovingly-built conversions there.

A Ferrari 355 engine into something crap like a Nova or Jazz (would have to be mid engined and rear drive probably). But keep it standard looking.

My brother had a Polski-Fiat pickup with a twin cam Fiat engine in it. It sounded great but as it was only the 1.6 my girlfriend's 205 xld could out drag it with ease.

I wanted to put Peugeot 405 Mi 16 engine and four wheel drive into the 205.

One of the better looking RX8s with a sensible piston engine. I don't even care if it isn't very fast. I just want to be able to use it and not worry.

(My lack of interest in an RX8 with a rotary is why I haven't even bothered to learn which RX8 model numbers are the good looking ones.)
